True confession 😬
I listen to podcasts, meeting recordings and audio books at 1.5x speed and the pace is completely comfortable for me.
Am I the only one? 🤔
Before digital devices influenced our attention, you could count on 2.5 minutes of your audiences’ focus back in 2004, which dwindled to 47 seconds in 2017, and now it’s less than 7 seconds. Less than a goldfish!
This is supported in film and TV where a single camera shot is 2-4 seconds in length and an entire commercial can be 6 seconds.
Unbelievable? Here’s the evidence.
If you’re skeptical, I challenge you to watch the entire 1968 film, The Thomas Crown Affair.
It’s a crime thriller with actor Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway directed by Canadian Norman Jewison.
As my grandmother would say, “It’s as slow as molasses in January!”
In fact, I found it painful to watch. I’d love to know your experience.
By comparison, watch the 1999 version with the same name featuring Pierce Brosnan, Rene Russo and Denis Leary. It moves at quite a different pace.
Public Speaking giant, TedX speaker and trainer David JP Phillips has studied the neuroscience of effective communication and shares the critical importance of keeping an audience’s attention every second!
That’s a whole lot more than words – it’s body language, facial expressions, hand gestures, vocal pace and volume, oh and of course, a great story.
It requires a ton of practice to get it right, right?
